"A gorgeous translucent ruby color, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is dark and more intense than most wines in its category. It opens with masses of dried black cherry, smoke traces, grilled herbs and dusty violets. It's creamy in texture yet lifted and refined with a pure core of ripe strawberry complemented by cloves. Rosy inner florals dance throughout. Complex yet giving, the 2022 tapers off potent and long with a tug of fine tannins and autumnal spices. This is a Rosso? My guess is baby Brunello. Bravo".

Voliero
Andrea Cortonesi has always been a 'secret weapon' producer for us: The demand for his wines have gone through the roof in recent years. This is due to his exemplary winemaking and a string of rave reviews. Already the founder, proprietor and winemaker of the famed Uccelliera estate, in 2006 he started his own restaurant called Il Casato. It was in his capacity as restaurateur that today's label, 'Voliero' was born as the house pour. A true food-wine!
Patrons and the industry quickly took note and wanted Voliero bottles for their own cellars. Voliero wines are now sourced from higher elevation vineyards, and show a more elegant, refined side of Sangiovese. They are a wonderful contrast to the richer, more muscular wines Andrea makes at Uccelliera.
Andrea Cortonesi is undeniably one of the best producers in Montalcino. We've had the great pleasure of tasting today's wine many times over its evolution. From barrel years ago, to recently from the bottle, it has always been astounding.
This 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese and spends far less time aging in oak relative to its Brunello siblings however, it's no slouch. It has enough depth and power that it could be mistaken for a Brunello, until you see its price tag.
