"Château Matignon is owned by Jean-Marie Bouldy, who is better-known for his Pomerol property of Château Bellegrave. His 2016 Château Matignon is composed from a blend of merlot and cabernet franc, with the vineyards certified organic and in conversion to biodynamics. The wine is nicely ripe at 13.5 percent octane and offers up a deep and fine old school bouquet of red and black cherries, menthol, cigar wrapper, a lovely base of soil tones, tobacco smoke and a hint of cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, elegant and complex, with a fine core of fruit, lovely soil signature and grip, ripe tannins and a long, refined and impeccably balanced finish. This is excellent claret, without any of the new oak and malo in new barrel makeup we are so accustomed to seeing at so many classified growths these days in Saint Émilion."
