Scarbolo, a charming family winery founded in 1982 and now in the hands of its third generation, is nestled in Friuli, the northeastern region of Italy, surrounded by the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. The winery is dedicated to showcasing the distinctive qualities of local white wines, with a special focus on the lesser-known heritage of Pinot Grigio.
Hailing from Grave, a less-heralded appellation, Valter Scarbolo's philosophy and wines embody a spirit of innovation, progress, and occasional rebellion. They proudly reflect the elegance, persistence, and, most importantly, the balance unique to Friulian terroir. Situated in the village of Lauzacco, close to the western bank of the river Torre and the Slovenian border, the winery employs low-yielding and densely planted vines, following sustainable practices outlined by SQNPI. The vines thrive in stratified soils composed of medium-textured clay, sand, limestone, and alternating layers of gravels, shaped by ancient erosion processes and glacial melting dating back 15,000 years. The resulting grounds, combined with eastern winds from Slovenia, sea breezes, and the protective barrier of the Alps against northern climates, contribute to the creation of gracefully powerful and ambrosial wines.
Currently overseen by Lara and Mattia, the daughter and son of the Scarbolo family, the winery embraces dynamism and integrity, symbolized by the growing wheels in its logo. They produce an impressive array of four different versions of Pinot Grigio, including two ramato varieties (a skin-contact wine), a co-fermented white blend called My Time, an appassimento Merlot, and the flagship Campo del Viotto Refosco. The family tends to 30 hectares of vines, yielding approximately 200,000 bottles in a typical year.
