The Producer

Château Lamartine

Chateau Lamartine was built in 1922 on the site of a century-old oak tree. Local legend recounts that in the Middle Ages this was where Martine, the daughter of the local Baron, would meet her various suitors. As a family property that dates back to the Middle Ages, these vineyards survived the Gallo-Roman wars as well the invasion of phylloxera in 1878. The terroir of the 37 hectares faces South on clay and limestone soils which guarantees a perfect maturity to the Malbec, coming from vines all between 20 and 45 years old.

The Cahors appellation is not only one of the most historically important wine appellations in all of France, it is the spiritual home of the Malbec grape. Situated along the Lot River in the southwest, a few hours inland from Bordeaux, Cahors had the market for powerful Malbec reds essentially cornered, only to have its thunder stolen by the dense, polished wines of Mendoza, Argentina. But a growing legion of forward-thinking properties are trying to change that and Chateau Lamartine is one such estate.
