Founded in 1857 by brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani. Bertani is one of the gatekeepers of Amarone with its classic, unchanged style over decades. Bertani family members remain a presence to this day. Being educated in Burgundy by Jules Guyot, the French viticultural background of the Bertani’s combined with their extensive experience back in Italy are the pillars of the estate’s recognizable elegance. Unlike many other local producers, Bertani owns its own vineyards and is able to oversee the entire winemaking cycle from start to finish, gaining the reputation of having some of the absolute best wines in the region. An amazing find!
The winery is located in Grezzana, a province in the Valpantena DOC, north-east of Verona. Here, the company headquarters remains since its founding, including the estate’s historic vineyards and cellars that are still in use. The Valpantena valley is covered with marble-calcareous soil containing large quantities of iron, which impart unique, spicy mineral flavours in the grapes. The particular characteristics of the soil have allowed the wines to be labeled officially a CRU status within the Valpolicella DOC; the only one among the seven valleys of Valpolicella.
