For 145 years, López de Heredia has stood as one of the most significant and highly sought-after producers in the Rioja region. They possess all 170 hectares of the vineyards they cultivate, with some vines dating back a century, and have maintained a tradition of working without chemical intervention for generations. The sustainability practices embraced by younger producers today have been integral to López de Heredia's production since its inception.
What sets these wines apart, contributing significantly to their widespread demand, is the extensive aging process before they are released. To provide context, the legal requirement for a Gran Reserva Rioja dictates a minimum aging period of two years in barrels and two years in bottles (a total of four years at least). López de Heredia, however, unveils their Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rioja after an impressive twenty years. Therefore, the 2001 vintage we present here represents their latest Gran Reserva release and the first since 1996. Enjoying these wines is a truly unique experience, as they encapsulate bottled history in every sip.
It's important to remember that taste is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role.
