The Grati family has been crafting wine for five generations, nestled in the elevated hills of Chianti Rufina, situated just to the east of the city of Florence. Their ancestral property, Villa di Vetrice, dates back to the 15th century and stands as the heart and soul of their estate.
Gualberto Grati is deeply rooted in the unique terroir of Rufina, the local grape varieties, and the rich traditions of the region. This valley, characterized by its clay and galestro (calcareous marl) soil, runs in a north-south direction, allowing the cool nighttime winds from the Alps to maintain high acidity and preserve the wine's fresh aromatics.
The wines produced in Rufina are renowned for their exceptional longevity, especially when it comes to Sangiovese. They are known as ‘Grato Grati’ and were previously labeled as Vino da Tavola (before the 1990s) or IGT Toscana. The name ‘Grato Grati’ pays homage to Gualberto's grandfather. These wines are aged in large barrels, known as ‘botti,’ for a period of 3 to 6 months before being released.
Historical records dating as far back as 1716 reveal that the Medici family recognized the Rufina region for its wines' lasting quality, structural integrity, and nobility.
The Grati family has been landowners for generations and currently possess over 500 hectares of land, including 140 hectares of vineyards on the western side of the valley. Their primary grape varieties include Sangiovese, along with Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia, and Trebbiano. Rufina is a relatively small appellation, with only about 800 hectares in total, making the Grati family significant contributors to the region's viticulture.
