"A fragrant and pretty take on primitivo with dried lavender and violets highlighting a backdrop of dried blackberries and dried oranges. There’s a punch of powerful, ripe tannins to puncture the ripe forest fruit and drive home this full-bodied yet balanced red to a chewy finish."

Salice Salentino, a charming village in Salento abundant with vineyards and olive groves, forms the picturesque backdrop that breathes life into the wine tradition of Leone de Castris. The roots of this renowned winery date back to 1665 when Duke Oronzo, from the distinguished Earls of Lemos family, was captivated by the landscape. He divested his Spanish properties to harness the richness of Salento's terroir. The duke undertook extensive planting, spanning 5,000 hectares across Salice, Guagnano, Veglie, Villa Baldassarri, Novoli, and San Pancrazio.
In the early 19th century, the winery ventured into exporting bulk wine to the United States, Germany, and France until 1925, when Piero and Lisetta Leone de Castris initiated bottled production. A pivotal moment occurred in 1943, marking the birth of Five Roses, the first-ever bottled rosé in Italy. Don Piero's bold move to have the wine endorsed by American General Charles Poletti propelled the brand's global recognition. The name ‘Five Roses’ reflects the family's five children.
Under Cavaliere del Lavoro Salvatore Leone de Castris in the '60s, the company flourished domestically and internationally. Today, Piernicola Leone de Castris, managing director since the late '90s, continues the legacy. The winery cultivates a diverse range of grapes, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Negroamaro, Malvasia nera, Verdeca, Moscato, Aleatico, and Primitivo. Their extensive portfolio encompasses red, white, and rosé DOC wines, IGT Salento and Puglia wines, and sparkling rosé and white wines.
With an average annual production of 2.5 million bottles, Leone de Castris proudly upholds a centuries-old tradition, exclusively crafting wines from the bountiful land of Puglia. Their mission encapsulates 350 years of history, seamlessly blending the past with a forward-looking perspective.
