    "The Acentor bottling from Isaac Fernandez is produced from vines that are more than fifty years of age, which are planted at relatively high altitudes of seven hundred and fifty to nine hundred meters above sea level, with the soils being iron-rich clay. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks and aged in a combination of French and American casks. The wine offers up a deep, ripe and nicely complex nose of black cherries, grilled venison, coffee grounds, scorched earth and a touch of fresh herbs in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with nice, plush black fruit on the attack, a good signature of soil, fine depth at the core and lovely length and grip on the ripely tannic and peppery finish. This is 14.5 percent octane, but very nicely balanced. A great, great value at fourteen dollars a bottle here in New York! 2017-2035."

    On the nose, scents of white flowers, wet stone, and cantaloupe emerge over top hints of black licorice and fresh herbs. The palate is medium dry with concentrated pink grapefruit and mandarin orange on the attack, giving way to yellow cherry fruit on the mid-palate. The finish is very persistent, with notes of crushed stone, spice and citrus zest. The long, cool ripening of this vintage has delivered remarkable flavour complexity and a seamless integration of body and acidity on the palate.

    "This is a very attractive gewürztraminer, listed as off-dry but really quite dry to my palate. It displays very good weight and texture, with good structure and balance. Winemaker Angelo Pavan is forthright about his approach to this variety: “The acidity drops quickly in gewürztraminer, and a lot of people pick early to get the acidity. But I prefer to pick it later, to make sure the fruit is ripe. Gewürztraminer isn’t about acidity; you want this oily texture. If you want acidity, drink riesling.” This example clearly embodies his approach. It shows the classic flavour profile, some viscosity in the texture, and the characteristic slight bitterness toward the back palate. And the acidity? This is not a fat, low-acid gewürztraminer, any more than it’s the blowsy style.     Picaro means 'rogue' or 'rascal', and this rapscallion of a wine is a youthful interpretation of the Toro region's style. The grapes come from mature vines of over 50 years of age, but the wine spends only three months in oak, preserving their natural fruit profile. Vivid crimson-purple in the glass. Aromas are of ripe blackberries and raspberries, with subtle hints of fresh cocoa. The palate is bold yet supple, with ripe tannins and a mineral grip.
