"Made, as it nearly always is, from Tempranillo with 5% Mazuelo, all from Rodezno, this sees 100% older American wood. It has more zip and focus than the Alberdi from the same winery, with impressive underlying structure, savoury bramble and red cherry fruit and classic Rioja Alta sweetness."

94 points - Tim Atkin MW, April 2018

"The sleek and polished 2011 Viña Arana is mostly Tempranillo with 5% Mazuelo from vineyards in Rodezno and Labastida. The destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in stainless steel followed by a slow malolactic. The wine matured in used, neutral American oak barrels for three years. It's very balsamic, possibly from the extended élevage, with aromas of cigar ash, incense, noble woods, vanilla and cocoa. The palate is polished, with resolved tannins and nice, integrated acidity. 150,000 bottles produced. It's been in bottle since July 2015. They uncorked a bottle of the 1985, and the wine was lively with a developed nose, great complexity and a velvety palate. It's a wine that ages very well." - Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate

"A rich and very creamy wine with vanilla and toasted oak. Very flavorful, rich and beautiful. Full body, round tannins and a delicious finish. Decadent. Traditional Rioja style. Drink now."

"You only sense the ripeness on the nose because this is still tightly reined-in. On the palate, peachy fruit and the textural richness are very impressive. The wine keeps pumping out the ripe fruit right to the mineral fireworks display at the finish. Better from 2018 or any time during the next decade is good."

"Limpid, yellow-gold. A highly complex, mineral-laced bouquet evokes fresh citrus and orchard fruits, chalky minerals, sweet butter and white flowers. A hint of anise emerges with air. Shows noteworthy depth and sharp delineation in the mouth, offering vibrant orange zest, pear nectar, buttered toast and succulent herb flavors that tighten up slowly on the back half. Powerful, yet graceful in character, displaying superb focus and mineral thrust on an impressively long finish that features lingering floral and orchard fruit flourishes. (Aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks and used 500-liter French oak barrels.)"

"Lurid, violet color. Lively, mineral-tinged aromas of cherry, black raspberry and candied flowers pick up a suggestion of incense as the wine stretches out. Sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering intense cherry liqueur, dark berry and spicecake flavors and a suave violet pastille accent. Finishes silky, floral and impressively long, with fine-grained tannins adding shape and gentle grip. (Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, followed by 10 months in a stainless steel tank.)"(JR)

"A great success from a challenging vintage, the 2013 Pegau is as aromatic as ever, loaded with scents of garrigue, smoke and saddle leather. Those are backed by ample dark-fruit flavors, hints of grilled meat and firm, dusty tannins. Drink 2018–2030."

"Deep ruby. Potent aromas of ripe dark berries, licorice pastille, woodsmoke, game and garrigue, plus a peppery nuance that adds spiciness and lift. Round and fleshy on the palate, offering intense blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that become livelier and sweeter with air. The very long, energetic, sharply focused finish features fine-grained tannins and subtle, lingering notes of dark berries and smoked meat."

    Hacienda Monasterio

Ribera del Duero (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Ham, Hard Cheese, Red Meat

"A superb vintage in the region has produced a great 2014 Reserva, a wine where they select grapes from the soils with more limestone within their estate. A blend of 80% Tempranillo with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has good ripeness, power and freshness, coming through as a textbook Reserva. It's still young and lively after an élevage in French barrels (40% of them new) for some 20 months. This was inspired by some wines from Bordeaux, even though it has a somewhat more Mediterranean profile... The palate of this 2014 is better than the nose at the moment. Sisseck compared 2014 to 1995, an almost perfect year in the region."

94 points - Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate, Aug 2018

"Hacienda Monasterio tends to make its best wines in cool vintages like 2014. Combining Tempranillo with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is fresh and leafy with notes of green herbs and aromatic coffee bean oak."

  10. New Côte-Rôtie Réserve by Stéphane Ogier 2015

    $954.00

    Michel et Stéphane Ogier

    France (France), Northern Rhône (France)

    6 x 750 ml

    Red Meat, Vegetables

"Deep ruby. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, violet, olive paste and smoky minerals, with a suave floral topnote. Offers densely packed black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that stretch out slowly as the wine opens up. Displays excellent definition on a very long, lively finish that's given shape by chewy, building tannins. (JR) "

    94 points - Vinous, April 2018

"The 2015 Côte Rôtie Reserve is brilliant stuff. I was able to taste this from two separate bottles and it never failed to impress. Coming from all the estate terroirs, and including some seriously top juice, its deep purple color is followed by a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, spiced meats, and incense, with an undeniable mineral/dried earth character developing with time in the glass. With full-bodied richness, ripe, yet present tannin, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish, it needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will cruise for 10-15 years. 93+"

     93 points - Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2018

"The 2015 Cote Rotie Reserve is rich, velvety-textured and long. Raspberries and herbal notes are joined by hints of cured meat in this medium to full-bodied wine. It should drink well for up to 15 years. (JC)"
