"You know those bottles that bring you to your knees? This is one of them. With a crushed velvet mouth feel — all polished on top and plush underneath — this wine draws you in with flavours of ripe mixed berries, café latte, smoked plum, milk chocolate, toasted tobacco and vanilla cream. Elegant yet slightly brooding, this wine is a steal."

  4. New Valtuille Cepas Centenarias Bierzo by Bodegas Castro Ventosa 2015

    $444.00

    Bodegas Castro Ventosa

    Bierzo (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Red Meat, Roasted Vegetables, Soft Cheese

"I was very pleasantly surprised by the elegance and balance of the 2015 Valtuille Cepas Centenarias, centenary Mencía from two plots in the village of Valtuille. This is always one of the finest wines in the portfolio, but this 2015 was especially harmonious, combining aromas of violets and wild herbs with an earthy touch and a medium-bodied palate with very refined tannins that made it beautifully textured. There is an extra degree of complexity here and it has the depth of the very old vines. This has to be one of the finest vintages for this bottling. There are roughly 2,500 bottles of it."

    La Rioja Alta

    Rioja (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Roasted Vegetables

"This is a driven and super tight Gran Reserva with dark berries and hints of spice and cedar. A spicy red-pepper undertone and some dried flowers. Full to medium body, integrated tannins and a superb finish. A great wine. Available in September 2018. A wine for the cellar, but why wait?"

    97 points / Number 8 on Top 100 Wines of 2018 - James Suckling, Dec 2018

"One of the Rioja classics, a unique compromise between graceful, long ageing and lively fruit expression. Silky and gentle, a feast for the senses."

    97 points - Decanter Magazine,2018

"Reflecting the excellence of the vintage, as well as its power, this is the latest in a superb run of 904 Gran Reservas. Combining Tempranillo with 10% Graciano for added backbone and grip, it’s a wine that is (as ever) supremely drinkable on release, but will reward further cellaring. Spicy, aromatic and enticing, with the vanilla sweetness of American oak, savoury tannins and a core of stylish, balsamic-edged fruit. Traditional Rioja with a modern accent."

96 points - Tim Atkin MW, Nov 2017

"Time flies, and the 904 for sale is already the 2009 Gran Reserva 904, as they didn't bottle it in 2008. They are only going to bottle their top wines in very good and excellent vintages, so there will be a 2010 and 2011 but no 2012, 2013 or 2014. This super classical cuvée showcases the wines from Haro, silky and elegant after long aging in oak and a good future in bottle. 2009 was a powerful vintage, ripe but with good balance. The blend is approximately 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, fermented in stainless steel with a 78-day natural malolactic. The aging was in four-year-old American oak barrels crafted by their own coopers; the wines aged from April 2010 until April 2014. During that time, the wine was racked every six months, to be finally bottled in November 2014. This is usually my favorite wine from the portfolio, where the balance between aging and youth reaches its highest point. It's developed but it keeps some fruit character, plenty of spices and balsamic aromas. The palate is polished but has some clout, with clean, focused flavors and a long, spicy and tasty finish. This represents good value for the quality it delivers. 150,000 bottles produced. Because they didn't produce 890 in 2009, the grapes for the 890 were in this 904. As a curiosity, they uncorked a 1982, which was superb."

    Andre Perret

    France (France), Northern Rhône (France)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Ham, Rich Fish, Soft Cheese, White Meat

"Coming largely from 80-year-old vines in the Coteau du Chery, Perret's 2016 Condrieu Chery is a tremendous effort. The decomposed granite soils seem to impart more tension into the wine, so although this medium to full-bodied wine is rich and fruity, it's also lively, spicy and fresh. Floral and apricot aromas lead the way, followed by a silky-textured palate that never seems heavy and a nearly never-ending finish. Just wow."

    Domaine Jamet

    France (France), Northern Rhône (France)

    12 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Ham, Hard Cheese, Red Meat

"Plenty of violets, pepper and deep-set spices are all part of the equation here, and this is a very complex Côte Rôtie that has a wealth of darkly stony notes, coal smoke and dark chocolate. Just superb! The palate's succulent and swathed in plush, fine tannins that envelop black- and red-plum flavors. Plenty of volume, great elegance and a lot of detail. A vintage when experienced makers could still shine, and the sorting in the vineyard was clearly a large part of this. Classy wine with so much on offer. Best from 2020 for a decade or more. Tasted in tank shortly before bottling."

    95-96 points - James Suckling, Oct 2016

"“Finesse, but not without concentration” is how Jean-Paul referred to the 2014s. We tasted a number of component parts from across his blends of 16 different parcels. Rather than bottling single parcels he prefers to blend, and keeps new oak to a minimum (10-15%). The overall impression is a fragrant, floral, peppery style with good aromatic definition and adequate concentration for medium-term ageing. It will be ready relatively early, and despite not being a terribly weighty vintage, its elegance and balance with provide much pleasure."

"Enticingly fragrant, this gorgeous wine opens with classic Nebbiolo aromas of woodland berry, wild rose, forest floor, pipe tobacco, dark spice and a balsamic whiff of menthol. Reflecting the nose, the delicious, structured palate delivers dried cherry, raspberry compote, truffle, star anise and a note of crushed mint. Firm but noble tannins provide the framework and bestow impressive aging potential."

    Bruno Giacosa

    Italy (Italy), Piedmont (Italy)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Ham, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Risotto

"The balance of cherry, strawberry and sweet spice flavors and dense, dusty tannins leaves a divide that needs time to bridge. Offers the requisite amount of fruit, and the finish persists, with sweetness to offset the tannins. Firm, dense and long, gaining floral notes and a more ethereal profile with air. Best from 2022 through 2040."
