    "I was very pleasantly surprised by the elegance and balance of the 2015 Valtuille Cepas Centenarias, centenary Mencía from two plots in the village of Valtuille. This is always one of the finest wines in the portfolio, but this 2015 was especially harmonious, combining aromas of violets and wild herbs with an earthy touch and a medium-bodied palate with very refined tannins that made it beautifully textured. There is an extra degree of complexity here and it has the depth of the very old vines. This has to be one of the finest vintages for this bottling. There are roughly 2,500 bottles of it."

    "The 2012 Thalarn is a great cool-climate Syrah, reminiscent of a Northern Rhone, or rather a Syrah from Valais, with its wild, slightly rustic character. Right now it is covered by the baby fat and the aromas from the best French oak money can buy, as it’s extremely young, and needs some years to grow up. While delicious right now, it will only get better if you wait. It has a fine palate, with a silky texture and saturated, round tannins. The 2008, the first vintage from a cool year which only reached 11.3% alcohol, is sublime now, if that gives you a hint about drinking windows. Drink 2015-2022."

    "The nose was dark with violet floral tones, black cherry, dusty spices, leather and hints of savory herbs. On the palate, I found silky textures balanced by zesty acids with texturally-rich cherry and strawberry, sweet spices and minerals which all combined to form a beautifully balanced expression. It finished long with saturating dark berry fruits, spice, and fine tannin, yet it was energized by lingering acidity. I’ve liked this wine in the past, but in 2013 it has reached a whole new level."

    "Plenty of violets, pepper and deep-set spices are all part of the equation here, and this is a very complex Côte Rôtie that has a wealth of darkly stony notes, coal smoke and dark chocolate. Just superb! The palate's succulent and swathed in plush, fine tannins that envelop black- and red-plum flavors. Plenty of volume, great elegance and a lot of detail. A vintage when experienced makers could still shine, and the sorting in the vineyard was clearly a large part of this. Classy wine with so much on offer. Best from 2020 for a decade or more. Tasted in tank shortly before bottling."

    "“Finesse, but not without concentration” is how Jean-Paul referred to the 2014s. We tasted a number of component parts from across his blends of 16 different parcels. Rather than bottling single parcels he prefers to blend, and keeps new oak to a minimum (10-15%). The overall impression is a fragrant, floral, peppery style with good aromatic definition and adequate concentration for medium-term ageing. It will be ready relatively early, and despite not being a terribly weighty vintage, its elegance and balance with provide much pleasure."
