    Domaine Les Pallières

    France (France), Southern Rhône (France)

    1 x 1500 ml

Breads, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Vegetables

"Very complete and complex wine that has intensity and elegance. Raspberry and rose-like perfume, this has a long, red-fruit core with dark spices wrapped deep into the heart of the palate. Detailed texture, the noble, long tannins cloaked in wild, red plums and berries. Terrific freshness here. Wow. Drink or hold."

    Bernard Levet

    France (France), Northern Rhône (France)

    6 x 750ml

    Duck breast

"Deep lurid ruby. A complex bouquet evokes ripe cherry and boysenberry, backed by hints of smoky minerals, game and licorice. Seamless and broad on the palate, offering sweet black and blue fruit, salty olive and violet flavors that are given spine and lift by a core of zesty acidity. Smooth and open-knit for a Levet wine, finishing with excellent clarity, building tannins and strong, smoky persistence.”

"The 2016 4 Kilos is Callet from old vines and is from a fresher year that produced a very elegant and fine wine. They didn't change anything in the vinification or aging, because they changed in 2013, and the wine just follows that path. This has to be one of the finest vintages for Callet; the wine is super elegant, subtle and nuanced, with the Mediterranean character and no trace of oak. Callet is a delicate grape and needs a gentle aging, and so they use 600-liter barrels and 2,500-liter oval vats, which respects the floral quality of the grape. The palate is medium-bodied and has fine tannins with grip, moderate acidity and moderate alcohol, all in great harmony and balance. This is simply superb. 15,000 bottles were filled in April 2018."

  4. New Barolo Gattera DOCG (OWC) by Fratelli Ferrero 2016

    $534.00

    Fratelli Ferrero

    Italy (Italy), Piedmont (Italy)

    6 x 750 ml

Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Pasta, Red Meat

Gattera is a single vineyard in La Morra. The Gattera Barolo is traditionally made in large oak casks to give it light oak and showcase the Nebbiolo grape. Hints of red fruit, especially cherries, balsamic scents and notes of rose. Very delicate. The tannins are present but well balanced. Elegant and classy. > Learn More

    Poggio di Guardia

    Italy (Italy), Tuscany (Italy)

    6 x 750 ml

Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Pasta, Red Meat

"At the pinnacle of the local red blend food chain at Poggio di Guardia is this merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon based wine made with the use of rebo housed in Terracotta Orcio amphora. Siena used this garrison high point to warn of enemy sightings during the Florentine wars of the Middle Ages and today it houses some of Tuscany's most fascinating vineyards. Oenologist Stefano di Blasi and Gabbiano's Federico Cerelli have transformed these Radda in Chianti blocks into some of the (Chianti Classico) territory's great IGT cru sites. Rebo was created in 1948 by Rebo Rigotti at the San Michele all'Adige research center in Trentino and why it was planted in Chianti Classico is not quite certain. Not dried appassimento style but instead fortified in amphora there are glycerin and dried fruit notes of great tang to support what the Bordeaux grapes just seem to want and need. More ripeness, consistent funk and great grip are hallmarks of 2016 and spice is simply everywhere. The changes of tense, chords and tempo are so unique to this blend and the place. You just have to try it to believe."

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is ample, generous and inviting. Inky dark fruit, cloves, lavender, licorice, menthol and spice give the 2016 lovely shades of darkness that complement its mid-weight structure nicely. This elegant, gracious Cabernet has plenty to offer. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so."

    Fattoria Poggerino

    Italy (Italy), Tuscany (Italy)

    6 x 750 ml

Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Pasta, Red Meat

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a total knock-out. Plush, dark and explosive, the 2016 possesses superb depth and textural richness. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, espresso, licorice, new leather and spice all flesh out in a heady, super-distinctive Riserva loaded with class and personality. The 2016 is fabulous in every way, but I especially admire its explosive energy."

The 2017 Carril del Rey has a very pale color, the palest of the single vineyard reds, as the Garnacha here tends to have less color in warmer vintages when the ripening is faster and deeper colors in cooler years when ripening is slower and more complete. This is always a more Mediterranean expression of Garnacha, but this year the wine is unusually fine, elegant, aromatic and floral, with less alcohol than the 2018 I tasted next to it. It has an herbal and spicy twist, which makes it quite attractive. It's quite ethereal and showy, quite delicate. This seems to transcend the vintage. 2,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019.

"The 2016 Curtimenta is all Alvarinho aged for nine months in used French oak. It comes in at 13% alcohol. Sourced from 20+-year-old vines, this is made with fermentation on skins, resulting in more color and more tannins. The oak seems almost irrelevant here, as the structure of the wine and its concentration overwhelm and counter the wood. That's not to say there is no oak impact, but it is impeccably balanced. Then, as the winery suggests, it finishes with a bit of tannic pop. There is remarkable grip on the finish, good acidity and that tannic pop. The next day (when it seemed 50% better than on the first day tasted), this was tight, focused and intense, perhaps the best Curtimenta yet. It's very fresh, the fruit lifted and focused, despite the wood, and it is the acidity that seals the deal for this wine. It simply slices and dices the wood into splinters after it's open for a day. In 2015, its high-end sibling Parcela Única was the bigger star, if only by a bit. This year, it's pretty even, but the styles are radically different. This has greater purity and intensity, while its sibling has a lusher, richer feel. Curtimenta handles the wood far better (it usually does when young, and it receives less aggressive wood treatment), at least now. Whenever I thought the wood was becoming assertive, the acidity and fruit came right back up. The Parcela Única may be even deeper and more like a white Burgundy than a Vinho Verde. Choices, choices. Buy both! In time, the balance of both may change for the better as they pull in the wood even more. That's not as important with the Curtimenta, given less wood impact, but even the Curtimenta could benefit from a year in the cellar. Needless to say, they should age rather well (although Parcela Única edged into the lead on the third day after opening, making me doubt again which was better). It's a very different vision of Vinho Verde, showing what the region can do when its top producers perform at the top of their game."

The nose offers a complexity of aromas beautifully intermingled: prune, mocha, cherries, truffle, and vanilla plus a touch of spice. To taste, it reaches all corners of your mouth with a medium to full body, velvety smooth tannins, and clean, balanced acidity. Finishes with exceptional length and depth of flavour. Robust and austere, this wine may be enjoyed now or stored for years to come.
