Opens relatively quickly to showcase territory-driven tones of dried black fruit, resin, tar, cigar smoke, black olive and scorched earth. Medium-full with excellent complexity and persistence. There are fine tannins on the finish and a balanced acidity that will see this wine looking good into the future. Nice to taste an Etna Rosso with some age on it. Beautiful sense of place; extremely well made.

    From a single vineyard with 75+ year-old vines. Vivid red. Intensely perfumed aromas of ripe red berries, blood orange, Asian spices and smoky minerals, with a suave floral accent emerging with aeration. Silky, seamless and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a refreshingly bitter jolt of blood orange. Closes on an emphatic red fruit note, with gentle tannic grip and excellent persistence. This reminds me a lot of a high-class Burgundy from a warm vintage, or maybe a Grenache-based, cool-year southern Rhône wine.

    "The red flagship 2006 Viña Tondonia Reserva was inspired by the vineyards of the Médoc but produced with local grapes, 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, which achieved 13% alcohol in 2006. It always matures in used American oak barriques for some six years. The oldest of all the reds I tasted, it was also the one with more freshness, which speaks to the quality of the vineyard."

Then also very clean, pure and precise on the palate, displaying a lovely saline quality to the red berry and mineral flavors. Boasts an easygoing quality and plenty of early appeal, but has sneaky concentration and the stuffing to age well. Finishes very long with repeat floral nuances. I haven’t always been the biggest fan of these wines, which I often find to be too gamy and not especially pristine, but this is a knockout. Well done."

    "I love the way this wine has absorbed and reflects the sunny and warm personality of its maker, the brilliant Donatella Cinelli Colombini. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne has her spirit and her vision, and I recognize that as I taste through these samples. Her distinctive winemaking mark is achieved with botte and tonneaux aging, and her style is definitely fuller and more generous than most. It's a modern Brunello, if you care to categorize wines in this way. Only 6,660 bottles were produced. The vineyards are exposed to wider horizons that make for more light hours each day (from dawn to sunset) of the growing cycle. I'm on team Donatella."
