Spanning a distance of 1,000 miles from the country's northern tip to its southern coast, the grape-growing regions experience latitudes between 34º and 47º. This extensive area grants Kim Crawford a distinct advantage, as it encompasses a wide range of local climates and soil types, fostering unique regional flavours.

Kim Crawford's vineyards are strategically positioned in exceptional coastal locations, predominantly benefiting from clean sea breezes, long days, and crisp nights. Coupled with New Zealand's lengthy and dry autumn season, the grapes undergo slow ripening, resulting in heightened flavour intensity and the development of refined acidity. Ultimately, it is this amalgamation of factors—from varied regions and soils to temperatures and growth rates—that bestows upon Kim Crawford wines a harmonious balance of fruit and acidity.

In the dawn of the new millennium, Marlborough played a pivotal role in breaking the virtual spell of Kim Crawford. In 2000, the founders secured a state-of-the-art winery and acquired vineyards in Marlborough's cool Waihopai Valley. According to George M. Taber, a renowned American wine critic, ‘No other region in the world can match Marlborough, the northeastern corner of New Zealand’s South Island, which seems to be the best place in the world to grow Sauvignon Blanc grapes.’

Situated at 41º latitude south on the north end of the South Island, Marlborough stands out as one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest regions. Summer temperatures nearly reach 24ºC or 75ºF on average, contributing to a high heat summation during the growing season. Daytime prevailing nor’west winds from the mountains enhance flower fertility and ripening, while clear cool nights, influenced by ocean breezes, help maintain high acid levels in the grapes. This diurnal shift is a crucial factor contributing to the intensity of Kim Crawford's Marlborough wines.
