Nestled in the quaint town centre of Serralunga d'Alba in Piedmont lies one of the region's oldest family-operated wineries. Encircled by sprawling vineyards, the Massolino family has artfully crafted refined wines here for over a century, embodying their deep-rooted love for Piedmont. Brothers Franco and Roberto Massolino, the present custodians, share that their great-grandfather Giovanni envisioned the farm in 1896. Originally, it was his dream to produce wine alongside cattle farming and vegetable cultivation.

From a diverse farming background, the subsequent generation transformed the enterprise into a highly successful winery, setting unprecedented quality benchmarks. In the 1960s, the Massolino name gained prominence globally through strategic vineyard acquisitions, consortium co-founding, and the pioneering bottling of the region's inaugural single-vineyard Barolo. While adhering to traditional practices, the family-run winery adeptly captures the nuances of Piedmont's terroir in a contemporary manner.

In the southern region's calcareous and sandy soils, local Nebbiolo thrives, unveiling its mineral and spicy essence. Basic Barolo and Barbaresco wines source grapes from various zones, whereas single-vineyard counterparts, inspired by the French model, spotlight distinct terroirs. Massolino, where the esteemed Nebbiolo grape claims half the vineyard, excels not only in Nebbiolo but also in Dolcetto, Barbera, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Moscato. Roberto tends to the vineyards, while Franco, alongside oenologist Giovanni Angeli, oversees winemaking processes in the cellar. Utilizing traditional cement barrels and Slavonian oak, the winery upholds its age-old practices.

Driven by the relentless pursuit of advancement, the talented fourth generation propels this historic winery into a new era. The Vigna Rionda estate, with unwavering consistency, produces some of Piedmont's most intricate Nebbiolo wines, making Massolino a go-to for enthusiasts seeking Barolo, Barbaresco, and other Piedmont classics.
