Since Bill Foley acquired Sebastiani in 2008, the winemaking team has implemented several measures to craft top-notch wines that highlight the exceptional terroir and versatility of Sonoma County. One of the initial moves directed by Foley was to reduce production, allowing a concentrated focus on winemaking efforts for outstanding vineyard sites.

The estate vineyards, recently replanted, underwent careful matching of clones and rootstocks, aligning farming protocols with geography, topography, and climate. Yields are restricted across all properties, and each site is managed on a vine-by-vine basis. In terms of contract vineyards, collaboration is exclusive with growers who prioritize quality farming and are located in the sub-appellations of Sonoma County most suitable for each grape variety.

Within the cellar, a multitude of small lot wines are handled. The winemaking team now has the flexibility to experiment with techniques, such as adopting a more natural approach to Chardonnay by fermenting with indigenous yeasts found on the grape skins rather than using commercial yeast strains, for example.

As a result, Sebastiani is producing more concentrated, complex wines across all tiers – from the Sonoma County Selection to the Proprietor’s Selection. It's an exciting time to be a part of Sebastiani.
