This deep ruby red grape is grown in most areas of Spain. One exception is the southern area where temperatures tend to be higher for most of the year. An interesting fact about this grape is how many names it goes by in Spain alone. The Tempranillo is known as the Cencibel in La Mancha while those in Ribera del Duero know it as the Tinto Fino. Whatever the name, the grape is so popular that it is used in roughly 70% of the red blends produced in Navarra and Rioja. The flavor of the red wine produced from the grape has a slightly smoky taste that is somewhat like that of tobacco. There’s also a slightly spicy hint of flavor that enhances the underlying strawberry and red cherry tastes. While some prefer to drink the wine while it is still young, others prefer the results of allowing it to age in oak barrels for several years.
