"The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin: tart red berried fruit, laced with tobacco and dried herbs on the dry, crisp finish. This is a superb classical Rioja Crianza and a stunning value."

85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from 35 year-old vines grown in poor limestone soils. Aged for 8 months in French Oak barrels (1/3 new). Dark purple/black color. This nose offers aromas of blackberry and currant fruit with additional notes of cedar and violet/floral adding complexity. On the palate it is medium bodied with well-balanced acidity and fresh, youthful tannins that leave a slightly firm finish.

"Balsamic, tar, black raspberries, dark cherries and vanilla are all in play. I love the tannins here, which are steely and finely woven with clearly defined edges. Medium-bodied and medium-chewy on the finish. Drink now or hold."

"This is really well done with dark cherries, mulberries, licorice and tar. Very structured, refined and elegant on the palate, where edgy tannins gather pretty forest fruit together and mold them into fine, pastry-like sheets."

    Maetierra

    Rioja (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    12 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Duck breast, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Veal roasted

Produced at Maetierra, a winery owned by Vintae, this is a project based on four vineyards: Two are old-vine tempranillo dating to the 1920s and ’50s; one is garnacha planted in the 1920s; the fourth is graciano planted in the 1980s. They come together in a pretty red, a tight, silken mouthful of wine. This has the ripeness of cherries in syrup, but it’s savory and austere. There’s a lot of American oak in the aroma, needing air to relent and reveal the lush, warm, rich sweetness of fruit, even as the tannins continue to keep it dry. A juicy Rioja for steak.

    Los Autores

    Rioja (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Ham, Lard, Pasta, Red Meat, Vegetables

Los Autores is a new, specialty negociant label charged with finding some of the most exclusive, compelling, unusual and traditional bottlings of Rioja on the market. We are excited to bring these wines into Canada. For this 2nd edition bottling, made by Rioja legend Ezequiel "El Brujo, the Wizard" García (who made the legendary wines at CVNE during the 60s and 70s), we have a timeless, traditionally styled, Gran Reserva wine: primarily Rioja Alta fruit from long-time contracted mature vineyards in top sites, fermented in tank, racked into seasoned barrels generally 8-10 years of age, where the wine stays for 36 months prior to blending, a long rest in tank and then ageing in bottle. 82% Tempranillo, 8% Mazuelo, 8% Garnacha, 2% Viura. Think somewhere between La Rioja Alta "Viña Arana" and Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" in aromatic and palate profile, though released just a little bit younger.

    Bodega Akutain

    Rioja (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Hard Cheese, Pasta, Red Meat, Vegetables

"The 2004 Rioja Gran Reserva from Bodegas Akutain is a lovely the elegant side of Rioja Alta fruit, as it offers up a complex and utterly classic bouquet of plums, raspberries, cigar smoke, an impressively complex base of soil tones, cloves and toasted coconut. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and vibrant, with a great core of fruit, impeccable balance, lovely complexity and a very long, bright and classy finish. Just a great bottle of old school Rioja! 2016-2035+."

    Lopez de Heredia

    Rioja (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Ham, Pasta, Red Meat, Roasted Vegetables, Salted or Marinated Mushrooms

"Following the appreciation of the 2007 vintage from María José López de Heredia, the red 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is showing great, revealing unusual finesse and elegance. The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years."(LG)

    Ausás Bodegas y Viñedos

Ribera del Duero (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Ham, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Vegetables

"In its first year, the 2016 Interpretación is Tempranillo from over 40-year-old head-pruned vines on sand, clay and limestone soils with plenty of stones at 900 meters in altitude. It went through a cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and concrete vats. It matured for 16 months in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels, 40% of them new. I was blown away by the wine in bottle, after tasting the 2017 in barrel. This is Ausás's interpretation of Ribera del Duero after 30 years of experience. He's sourcing grapes from specific growers that he has known for a long time, as he had purchased grapes for Alión from many of them. The wine shows the character of Ribera, a chalky backbone of fine-grained tannins, coated by fruit and berries, an herbal, spicy touch and perfectly integrated oak. There is good freshness, a rare combination of elegance and power and superb balance. My guess is the wine should develop nicely and for a very long time in bottle."

    Hacienda Monasterio

Ribera del Duero (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Ham, Hard Cheese, Red Meat

"A superb vintage in the region has produced a great 2014 Reserva, a wine where they select grapes from the soils with more limestone within their estate. A blend of 80% Tempranillo with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has good ripeness, power and freshness, coming through as a textbook Reserva. It's still young and lively after an élevage in French barrels (40% of them new) for some 20 months. This was inspired by some wines from Bordeaux, even though it has a somewhat more Mediterranean profile... The palate of this 2014 is better than the nose at the moment. Sisseck compared 2014 to 1995, an almost perfect year in the region."

94 points - Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Aug 2018

"Hacienda Monasterio tends to make its best wines in cool vintages like 2014. Combining Tempranillo with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is fresh and leafy with notes of green herbs and aromatic coffee bean oak."
