    Fiuza

    Portugal (Portugal), Tejo (Portugal)

    12 x 750 ml

Breads, Ham, Hard Cheese, Pasta, Vegetables

"This is a serious, structured wine with its firm tannins still in place. The rich, black plum fruits and layers of acidity still need a little time to develop and lessen the dryness of this wine. The aftertaste reveals a more juicy side."

    Cortes de Cima

    Alentejo (Portugal), Portugal (Portugal)

    12 x 750ml

    Cured Meat, Hard Cheese

"Mid but deep cherry red. Lifted and sweet dark-red and black fruit – a mix of cherry and blackberry – with a slight smokiness that might be a touch of reduction or perhaps just the Syrah. Lovely fruit with just a touch of pepper. Vibrant and juicy on the palate, this is not complex but it is a terrific mouthful of fruit and freshness. Light but sufficient tannins. Very good value and surprisingly persistent."

    Quinta dos Roques

    Dão (Portugal), Portugal (Portugal)

    12 x 750ml

    Hard Cheese, Red Meat

"The 2016 Tinto is a blend of Touriga Nacional (50%), Jaen (20%), Alfrocheiro (15%), Tinta Roriz (10%) and Tinto Cão for the rest, all aged for ten months in used French oak. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. The 2016 vintage was what Luis called a real Dão year, less full-bodied than the 2015s and with more acidity. Well, acidity is sure not too low here. This has gorgeous aromatics and intensely flavorful fruit, but what makes this pop on the palate is the acidity that lifts and frames the fruit. It's not a big or fleshy wine, but the structure is excellent and the flavors are irresistible. The silky texture is sensual. The tannins are relatively ripe, so you can drink this now, but it is just a little tight. I'm not entirely sure this has enough flesh to develop much—concentration is not the strong point here—but the acidity will surely preserve it. This will still be fine in a decade. This is another very fine value from Roques this issue, in a very graceful style. There were 50,000 bottles produced."

    Dos Lusiadas

    6 x 750ml

    Pasta, Red Meat

In 2009, Rhone super star Michel Chapoutier picked out a plot in the Douro Valley. A small – very small – plot of 3 hectares, but full of promise: Eleivera. Here, the winters are tough, the summer a long, dry heatwave. To get sufficient output, Michel Chapoutier joined forces with local producers incredibly honest and pure representations of this region, which is a Unesco world heritage site. The bouquet shows intense with aromas of flowers, exotic fruit and red fruits. It is elegant with mineral notes. The palate is soft with a nice structure. There is a good weight and depth. Well balanced and fresh. The finish is long with the floral notes that linger. > Learn More

    Casa d'Arrochella

    Douro (Portugal), Portugal (Portugal)

    6 x 750 ml

Cured Meat, Red Meat, Veal roasted

"This sumptuously rich wine has the ripest black fruits along with solid tannins. The juicy acidity is what gives the wine its balance and that will develop as the powerful wine matures further."

    Quinta da Pellada

    Dão (Portugal), Portugal (Portugal)

    12 x 750ml

    Hard Cheese, Red Meat

"The 2016 Touriga Nacional Quinta de Saes was aged for 18 months in well-used French barriques and comes in at 13% alcohol. This is meant to be a lighter, more elegant Touriga than Castro's top-level wines. It is from youngish vines (12 years) in the Caniças vineyard. Elegant and light it most certainly is, but it has beautiful aromatics and flavors. Maria Castro says she always has a hint of geraniums from this vineyard. I get more blue fruits and violets (another reason why I like to avoid certain descriptors). Decide for yourself. The structure is modest—you can drink it now—but it has enough to support it well for several years, and it has a fresh feel. While it may well hold a decade, drinking it in the short to mid-term is a good idea. This is a great choice for a house pour. It can't be called a profound Touriga, but it is a great "starter Touriga," if I could put it that way, that gives you a glimpse into what this grape can be, classic in all respects. This is a reasonable value in a wine that is approachable, but with just a bit of distinction."

Here, the winters are tough, the summer a long, dry heatwave. To get sufficient output, Michel Chapoutier joined forces with local producers incredibly honest and pure representations of this region, which is a Unesco world heritage site. A clear, deep black with sustained crimson highlights. A powerful nose, showing dark fruit at first, along with some “garrigue” and spicy notes. Aromas of fruit (cherries, prunes) macerated in “eau de vie” can also be detected. The whole is underpinned by mineral notes (graphite) that bring a great deal of freshness. Full on the palate supported by impressive velvety structure. There’s flesh, weight and depth, all rounded off by an incredibly long finish. The dark fruit comes through again, giving a crisp sensation underpinned by nice mineral tautness that endows this wine with freshness and remarkable balance. > Learn More
