    Even my young daughter has learned that shoes and watches provide keen insights. This 2016 release has huge shoes to fill given the notable pedigree of our Elevation Riesling series. We are, however, fortunate that this vintage has big, “filling” feet that are firmly rooted in our St. Urban Vineyard providing a base of crushed limestone and wet shale. Now, the “watch” is the attention-grabbing, premium bling but it should never be overstated or too showy. The bright spark of classic lemon-lime zest, orange blossom, white peach and warm apricot jam stands tall from the glass in perfect balance and cuts a figure that keeps you completely engaged. That abundance creates sensory fireworks but it is all presented with sincere humility. For us, the focused elegance of the 2016 gently renders the inner power to present a wine of boundless energy – refined.

The violet, black current and raspberry notes are all expressed over a foundation of the aroma of tilled earth just before a lightning storm. A firm but resolved tannin structure is interlaced with a bright acidity making this wine ideal for pairings, and as these essential elements are finely balanced within this versatile wine, incredible flexibility and diversity is allowed.     “The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a terrific value and is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot, and the rest Petite Sirah. It has a Bordeaux-ish bouquet of new saddle leather, cedarwood, tobacco leaf, and smoky black fruits as well as medium body, plenty of fruit, sweet tannins, and a good finish. It’s not going to make old bones, but it has serious character, and I’d happily drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years.”

    "Located in a cooler part of Valtuille, El Rapolao is a vineyard that is bottled by a number of different producers, mostly from the circle of influence of Raúl Pérez. The 2015 Valtuille El Rapolao fermented with full clusters in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in well-seasoned, neutral 500-liter oak barrels. As with all old vineyards, the Mencía is interplanted with other varieties, like Estaladiña, Garnacha Tintorera and Souson, which might add to the tension the wine has, something that is especially remarkable in a warm and dry year like 2015. The palate has power and very good freshness, more elegant and with less rusticity despite its earthy touch. 2015 yielded well and there are some 1,700 bottles of it."
