France is noted for the quality of its wines and part of the reason is the Cabernet Sauvignon. Hailing from the Bordeaux region, this black grape is the foundation for some of the most appealing red wines in the world. History indicates that the Cabernet Sauvignon is the result of a fortunate accident that led to breeding a combination of the red Cabernet Franc grape with the white Sauvignon Blanc grape. From the 17th century on, this new grape has gained in popularity and shows no signs of slowing down. The grape provides a healthy dose of tannins, a factor that allows the wine to age gracefully over the years. Part of this is due to aging the wine in oak as a way to help bring out the many layers of flavor. Experts tend to consider it to be the ideal wine to serve with everything from a formal dinner to an afternoon snack of bread and cheese.
