"The Pearce-Predhomme partnership has gone where few have gone before when it came to sourcing the fruit for this limited, perhaps one-off, release of their Hyland Vineyard Pinot Noir. The McMinville Hyland vineyard is a rather surreal sight with vines planted in an unrecognized growth framework, covered in moss and dangling, gangly clusters of grapes that produce a unique and sensual flavour profile. Planted with a mix of the Pommard clone and the uniquely Oregonian Coury clone, which likely originated from Alsace, this vineyard produces a terroir driven pinot with attitude and wild complexity. The fruit of this vineyard is often blended with more conventionally farmed pinot to tame its wildness but Will Predhomme and Nicholas Pearce were intent on showcasing its idiosyncratic nature with the blessing of winemaker Laurent Montalieu of the Northwest Wine Company. The wine was aged in large, neutral oak barrels resulting in a transparent expression of site and a compelling textural component that seems to reverberate on the tongue. Unfortunately very little was made of this pinot well deserving of the premium price. Excellent length. Best now to 2022."

"It was Eyrie Vineyards’ David Lett who started this whole volcanic pinot noir thing 40 years ago and it is here out of this single, heritage vineyard in McMinville where Nicholas Pearce and Will Predhomme are laying négoce roots. This pinot noir is from a Pommard clone with opposing and complimenting ripeness and anti-ripeness attributes, located on a monster hill of 185 acres. The wine is made at the Northwest Wine Company by Laurent Montalieu and in 2015 we are witness to a pattern forming (or joining, depending on your vantage point) for McMinnville pinot noir. Here very floral with a sous-sous-terre saline current and richness that is forever held at bay by rock, viaduct geology and that specific Oregon salumi cure. A bit ferric in the best New World possible way. Really chewy pinot noir, not dangerous mind you because I’ll get over it and so will you. That’s volcanic for you. The alcohol cut above is honest at 13.6 per cent, not uncommon for Pommard and its inherent greeneess, which is a thing in terms of heredity and perpetual genetics. Ah, clonal selection, though certainly not clinical. Nice choice of vintage too. There were 120 cases made. Drink 2018-2022."
