    Bodegas Antonio Candela

    Spain (Spain), Yecla (Spain)

    12 x 750 ml

Breads, Hard Cheese, Lard, Pasta, Red Meat, Vegetables

"The raw meatiness of the monastrell variety pops out of the glass here. Brambles, heather, charcuterie, beetroot and bracken are all in play. Chewy and very spicy, this trades in deep flavors of undergrowth, encased in mouth-puckering tannins. Luckily, the wood is played out very succinctly, and this ends with acid kick and finesse."

    Bodegas Ismael Arroyo

Ribera del Duero (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    12 x 750 ml

"Showing a clean nose and up-front fruit with a spicy background, the 2015 Valsotillo Crianza seems to be getting closer to the classical profile of the wines from yesteryear. It has rustic elegance and personality, with some dusty tannins and a medium body."

    Envinate

    Ribeira Sacra (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750ml

Red Meat, Rich Fish, Roasted Vegetables, Salad

"The regional red from Ribeira Sacra 2018 Lousas Viñas de Aldea sets the tone for the portfolio in a cool and rainy vintage that has resulted in very fresh wines with great purity and definition. This mixes origins (Amandi, Bibei and Ribeiras del Sil), soils (but mostly gneiss, slate and granite), altitudes (400 to 600 meters) and exposures. It also mixes grape varieties—it's mostly Mencía with some 20% other grapes, including Merenzao, Brancellao, Caíño, Sousón, Mouratón, Alicante, Godello and Palomino, etc.—and comes from vines ranging between 15 and 60 years of age to represent the region and vintage. For Envínate, this 2018 is in line with previous cooler years like 2014 and 2016, but with lots of rain in June and July that resulted in mildew and especially black rot, which reduced yields by about 30%, and in some places whole parcels were lost. September was much drier, and they were able to harvest slowly and with the precision needed for each plot. The different plots fermented in concrete or open plastic bins with 70% to 100% full clusters. Thirty percent of the volume matured in concrete and the rest in used barriques with the lees and without racking for 11 months. They only used a little sulfur at bottling time. The backbone comes from Ribeiras del Sil, a zone that delivers vertical wines and adds freshness. It's perfumed with notes of violets, expressive and open, with lots of fruit, a spicy twist and the complexity of mixing different origins and soils. The palate is pungent and more powerful than it seems, with very fine minerality. Incredible for the price."

  8. New Picaro Ribera del Duero Tinto by Dominio de Aguila 2017

    $371.94

    Dominio de Aguila

Ribera del Duero (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

    Pasta, Red Meat

"2017 was an unusually short crop as a result of terrible frost in April 2017, when thermometers reached -10 degrees Celsius in some places. The 2017 Pícaro del Águila Tinto, their entry-level and most approachable red, was seriously affected, of course. They lost some 60% of the volume, but the wine is incredible for the condition of the year. It feels a little more mysterious, not as expressive or open, a bit reductive perhaps, but the aromas are clean and don't show any excess ripeness. They did an amazing job eliminating all the raisins that didn't make it into the fermentation vat, and the extra workload has clearly paid off. The wine has some grip and fine, chalky tannins. 17,025 bottles and 487 magnums produced. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined and with just a little sulfur added in October 2018 after 12 months in oak barrels."

  9. $384.00

    Bernabeleva

    Madrid (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Vegetables

The 2017 Carril del Rey has a very pale color, the palest of the single vineyard reds, as the Garnacha here tends to have less color in warmer vintages when the ripening is faster and deeper colors in cooler years when ripening is slower and more complete. This is always a more Mediterranean expression of Garnacha, but this year the wine is unusually fine, elegant, aromatic and floral, with less alcohol than the 2018 I tasted next to it. It has an herbal and spicy twist, which makes it quite attractive. It's quite ethereal and showy, quite delicate. This seems to transcend the vintage. 2,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019.

"Nine villages across the slopes of the Sonsierra supply the grapes for this rich, ripe cuvée of Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, producing a wine with smooth, plush black fig and mulberry flavours, well-handled and oak and impressive concentration for the vintage."
