"A lifted nose of gamy notes and wood smoke mingle with aromas of dark berry fruit and black cherry. A rarin’ to go, robust surge of palate flavours capture the senses with passionfruit, cranberry and red currant to the fore. The dry finish and aftertaste is lip-smacking good and lingers nicely with oodles of pizzazz. Give this a go with tourtière, porchetta pork roast or grilled medium-rare striploin. The price-quality balance tips well in your favour here."

"Violet perfume, leather and earth collide on the nose of this rich, intensely fruity blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. A fantastic bargain bottling that delivers consistently year after year, it offers plump, pristine cassis flavor etched by smoky, savory complexities. The finish is marked by a whisper of heat. Best enjoyed young."

  6. New Pinot Noir Select VQA by Big Head 2018 Pinot Noir Select VQA by Big Head 2018

    $540.00

    Big Head

Canada (Canada), Niagara (Canada), Ontario (Canada)

    12 x 750 ml

Pasta with Cream Sauce, Red Meat, Rich Fish, Soft Cheese, Veal roasted, Vegetables, White Meat

A modern example of Pinot Noir, showing dried black cherry, black tea, dried cranberry, and swiss herb candy with a whiff of pipe smoke. There is a sweetness on the nose, but the palate is dry and the tannins are present in the front. The dried fruit aroma is refreshed by a pronounced acidity, typical of the variety and the cooler vintage. I would recommend fattier game and poultry dishes, or lightly aromatic tomato based sauce on pasta.

"The 2016 Boca is a total stunner. Deep and fleshy in the glass, the 2016 is full of character. Ideally readers will be able to cellar it for a few years, as it is very young. Sweet tobacco, licorice, black cherry, plum and earthy notes develop with a bit of time in the glass. The 2016 is fabulous. There is just not much else to say. Well, except that it is also a remarkable value in ageworthy wine."

"The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Pergole Vece is especially spry and lifted, offering smoky minerals, citrus-tinged blackberries and hints of confectioner’s spice. It keeps the energy high from start to finish, as silky textures gain momentum through juicy acids, giving way to medicinal cherries, minty herbs and a hint of bitter espresso bean. The 2016 doesn’t miss a beat, with a caking of fruit concentrate creating a sensation of tension under an air of sweet inner florals."- Eric Guido, Vinous Media, January 2021

    Gerard Betrand

    France (France), Languedoc-Roussillon (France)

    6 x 750 ml

Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Veal roasted

"A deep, dense. spicy and smoke-edged nose here, there's menthol elements as well as red cherries, dark chocolate and tobacco. A lovely texture on the palate, immediately inviting and enveloping, drawing you in with the sumptuous concentrated fruit flavours and backbone of oak spice, liquorice and kirsch. Such a complex wine, with so much ageing potential. Could have gone a point higher in score but I think it will improve with a few more years in bottle and last up to thirty or forty. Open and decant if possible at least two hours before serving. A blend of 60-65% Syrah, 15-20% Grenache and Mourvèdre and touch of Carignan depending on the vintage."

  10. New RAW Malbec VQA 3L Jeroboam by Big Head 2017

    $395.00

    Big Head

Canada (Canada), Niagara (Canada), Ontario (Canada)

    1 x 3000 ml

Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Steak, Veal roasted

Wow, what a monster. The nose is intensely lifted, showing ripe blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, bramble-wood, and a slight green peppercorn tone. The palate is dry, concentrated, and textured. The flavours of ripe black fruit and sage fight to be noticed on the palate, and the battle is long. There is so much going on with this wine from a textural perspective. Not for the faint of heart, or nose, or tongue.

At WineOnline.ca we travel the world to ensure we can offer our clients the best red wine, along with the best red wine to be found anywhere. There are all sorts of types of red wines. To name some we have, dry red wine, sweet red wine, full bodied red wine, medium bodied red wine, light red wine, tannic red wine and structured red wine. There is a litany of words used to describe red wine types. There are 10’s of thousands of red wines produced all over the world. There are 1000's of different red grape varietals. Italy, on its own, has over 2000 indigenous grape varietals used to produce red wines of differing style. The most famous grape varietals used in the productions of top red wines are likely those from Bordeaux which include; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Pinot Noir is another very popular red wine varietal which is the only red grape they use for red wine production in Burgundy. In Burgundy, they do not even label the wines with the varietal, but rather the vineyard from which the grapes were grown. A few of the famous ones are Romanee Conti, La Tache, Vosne Romanee, Nuits St Georges, but there are many more good red wine types. At WineOnline.ca, one of our many, but perhaps our most important, job is to taste as many of these wines as possible, and bring in the best, along with the best values, in order to make them available to our clients. It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

When it comes to red wine, people’s preferences can be all over the map. Some people choose to take the safe road when it comes to drinking red wine. We do not advocate this approach. Different red wine is going to be appropriate for different times of the day/night/evening etc. The food you are eating is going to affect the taste of your red wine and the taste of your red wine is going to change the flavour of your food. The trick is to find the best red wine takes some experimentation. Don’t just go with the tried and true as you are missing out. Pinot Noir with your fish can be delectable. Nebbiolo with lamb is divine. How could you not love a little Chianti, (Sangiovese), with your eggplant Parmesan? We encourage experimentation. We consider it our job, to help you improve your wine life.
