"Very complete and complex wine that has intensity and elegance. Raspberry and rose-like perfume, this has a long, red-fruit core with dark spices wrapped deep into the heart of the palate. Detailed texture, the noble, long tannins cloaked in wild, red plums and berries. Terrific freshness here. Wow. Drink or hold."

    La Collina dei Ciliegi

    Italy (Italy), Veneto (Italy)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Hard Cheese, Pasta, Red Meat, Vegetables

No other Italian wine delivers the punch and hedonistic pleasure of a great Amarone, and, having garnered many awards, the La Collina dei Ciliegi Amarone 2015 is surely one of the finest. From a highly lauded cellar, this is a magnificent red. Fragrant, gamey and sensuous, with dark fruit, spice, tobacco leaf and dried floral notes. Structured, rich, juicy palate with liquorice/chicory root savoury elements, well-managed tannins and fruit intensity. Decent acid and a spirit finish. Austere, yet with length and freshness.

"Not yet bottled, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, and the rest assorted varieties (not destemmed), brought up all in foudre and old barrels. It has classic Pégau notes of ground pepper, earth, meat, truffle, and blackcurrants as well as medium to full body, good density, building tannins, and a great finish. Laurence compared this vintage to 2005, but I think this 2017 has more density and flesh. It’s a beautiful, classic Pégau that reminds me a slightly toned down 2009."

  7. New Barrua Isola dei Nuraghi IGT by Agricola Punica 2016

    $389.70

    Agricola Punica

    Italy (Italy), Sardinia (Italy)

    6 x 750 ml

    Pasta, Red Meat, Vegetables

Made exclusively from vines grown on the Barrua Estate, from an exciting blend of 85% Carignano, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, this wine has lovely complexity and depth. The aromas are deep and rounded with exotic notes of black cherry, wild strawberry, dried herbs and a hint of refined tobacco. The palate is pure and concentrated with layers of raspberry and black cherry fruit followed by savoury, liquorice and black pepper characters and an elegant mineral note on the finish. The tannins are fine and enveloping, balanced by an easing, refreshing acidity.

"This stylish blend of Carignano and 15% Bordeaux varieties has blackcurrant, tomato leaf, sweet spice and cinnamon aromas and a silky texture. Concentrated without being too heavy. Finely integrated tannins. Classy.  Drinking Window 2020 - 2030.”

    Bernabeleva

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Vegetables

The 2017 Carril del Rey has a very pale color, the palest of the single vineyard reds, as the Garnacha here tends to have less color in warmer vintages when the ripening is faster and deeper colors in cooler years when ripening is slower and more complete. This is always a more Mediterranean expression of Garnacha, but this year the wine is unusually fine, elegant, aromatic and floral, with less alcohol than the 2018 I tasted next to it. It has an herbal and spicy twist, which makes it quite attractive. It's quite ethereal and showy, quite delicate. This seems to transcend the vintage. 2,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019.

    Galardi

    Campania (Italy), Italy (Italy)

    6 x 750 ml

Breads, Hard Cheese, Pasta, Risotto, Vegetables

"Made from Piedirosso grapes and matured in new-wood barriques. The wine has a bright, ruby color and a broad bouquet with notes of Marasca cherry, lavender, myrtle and violet together with a fresh, vegetal nuance. The saline and taut mouthfeel is pleasing, harmonious, fresh and rewarding with soft and totally integrated tannins and an excellently persistent aftertaste."
95 points - Daniele Cernilli, Doctor Wine, Sept 2019
"This is an exciting red with a profusion of elderberries, blackberries, tea leaves and tar and licorice. It’s full-bodied and stacked in layers of structured tannins, the acidity flitting and swerving effortlessly through the agile dark fruit, helping the finish to spread out in long, complex bands of floral perfumes."

At WineOnline.ca we travel the world to ensure we can offer our clients the best red wine, along with the best red wine to be found anywhere. There are all sorts of types of red wines. To name some we have, dry red wine, sweet red wine, full bodied red wine, medium bodied red wine, light red wine, tannic red wine and structured red wine. There is a litany of words used to describe red wine types. There are 10’s of thousands of red wines produced all over the world. There are 1000's of different red grape varietals. Italy, on its own, has over 2000 indigenous grape varietals used to produce red wines of differing style. The most famous grape varietals used in the productions of top red wines are likely those from Bordeaux which include; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Pinot Noir is another very popular red wine varietal which is the only red grape they use for red wine production in Burgundy. In Burgundy, they do not even label the wines with the varietal, but rather the vineyard from which the grapes were grown. A few of the famous ones are Romanee Conti, La Tache, Vosne Romanee, Nuits St Georges, but there are many more good red wine types. At WineOnline.ca, one of our many, but perhaps our most important, job is to taste as many of these wines as possible, and bring in the best, along with the best values, in order to make them available to our clients. It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

When it comes to red wine, people’s preferences can be all over the map. Some people choose to take the safe road when it comes to drinking red wine. We do not advocate this approach. Different red wine is going to be appropriate for different times of the day/night/evening etc. The food you are eating is going to affect the taste of your red wine and the taste of your red wine is going to change the flavour of your food. The trick is to find the best red wine takes some experimentation. Don’t just go with the tried and true as you are missing out. Pinot Noir with your fish can be delectable. Nebbiolo with lamb is divine. How could you not love a little Chianti, (Sangiovese), with your eggplant Parmesan? We encourage experimentation. We consider it our job, to help you improve your wine life.
