From pharmacist to Chocolatier, the Neuhaus family has always prioritized the well-being and happiness of people. The family established its original Neuhaus Boutique in the exquisite Galerie de la Reine in Brussels back in 1857, and the shop continues to flourish there even today.
Jean Neuhaus, originally from Switzerland with Italian roots, underwent a name change from 'Casanova' to 'Neuhaus' upon his family's arrival in Switzerland. Initially aspiring to become a doctor to aid people, he pursued medical studies in Grenoble. However, he faced failure twice, primarily due to his aversion to the sight of blood. Settling in Brussels in 1857, he opened a pharmacy in the prestigious Queen's Gallery.
To bring joy to his customers in the pharmacy, Jean Neuhaus conceived the idea of coating medicines with the finest chocolate. In 1912, his grandson further developed this concept into the Belgian praline we are familiar with today: chocolate filled with delight instead of medicinal substances.
In 1915, Louise Agostini, the wife of Jean Neuhaus Jr., ingeniously devised an elegant gift box to safeguard their chocolates and present them attractively. This ballotin would go on to become an iconic element of the Belgian chocolate tradition.
It's important to remember that taste is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role.
