“Vigna San Marcellino is both youthfully fresh and maturely complex. It includes a healthy dose of the deeply coloured Pugnitello grape, and both this and the Sangiovese saw long post-fermentation macerations of over 30 days in 2016. Liquorice, tarragon and broom interlace with exuberant plum and understated toasted nuances that are seductive. Laden with black cherry and rich, velvety tannins, the palate is creamy in texture, while underlying chalkiness and saline minerality lend energy, leading to a sappy, refreshing finish."

“The absolutely magnificent 2016 San Marcellino is an almost impossible act to follow, but this 2017 acquits itself most admirably, belying the hot and arid 2017 vintage with remarkable freshness and purity. It's the fruit of serious labour and attention in the vineyards, details like draconian bunch removal to relieve vine hydric stress, and of course a supreme vineyard site to start with, replete with a mix of limey galestro and alberese. I love the focused dark cherry fruit without any signs of raisining or desiccation, the beautifully integrated wood, the fresh wild thyme and rosemary, lavender and cinnamon bark, the detailed tannins, abundant, tightly knit, but ultimately ripe, framed by surprisingly lively and zesty acids. Length and depth, and complexity are ultimately excellent. Surely one of the wines of the vintage. Capello basso.”
