    On the nose, scents of white flowers, wet stone, and cantaloupe emerge over top hints of black licorice and fresh herbs. The palate is medium dry with concentrated pink grapefruit and mandarin orange on the attack, giving way to yellow cherry fruit on the mid-palate. The finish is very persistent, with notes of crushed stone, spice and citrus zest. The long, cool ripening of this vintage has delivered remarkable flavour complexity and a seamless integration of body and acidity on the palate.

    "The young, unoaked and juicy Mencía 2016 Castro Ventosa, in a tall Bordeaux bottle with a pink and garnet label, like all wines, was harvested throughout the season, some before and others after the rain, as this is the biggest volume wine of the winery. The nose is very clean and expressive, with a Rhôneish feel to it. The palate is juicy, with unnoticeable tannins, good freshness and balance. These wines have been harvested earlier and earlier to achieve lower alcohol and more acidity, to make them more drinkable. This is a perfect example of it. 2016 was a short vintage because of mildew, and most of the vineyards delivered around 50% of their normal yields. This wine is no exception. Even if accessible and destined for the short term, they can be surprisingly long lived. Great value.

    "The 2014 Campo Arriba comes from one of the highest elevations in Yecla and it's a blend of 70% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and 10% Grenache aged three months in small French oak. This winery, started in 1925 by the Candela family, has really hit pay day with this amazing value. Blackberries, blueberries, acacia flowers, and chalky minerality dominate the aromatics and flavors. It is full-bodied, the price is absurdly low for a wine of this quality, and I suspect it can age nicely for another 5-6 years, although its true value is its exuberance, fruit purity and density."

    Picaro means 'rogue' or 'rascal', and this rapscallion of a wine is a youthful interpretation of the Toro region's style. The grapes come from mature vines of over 50 years of age, but the wine spends only three months in oak, preserving their natural fruit profile. Vivid crimson-purple in the glass. Aromas are of ripe blackberries and raspberries, with subtle hints of fresh cocoa. The palate is bold yet supple, with ripe tannins and a mineral grip. Enjoy on its own or with boldly flavoured pasta dishes or spicy meat skewers.

As it stands, it's pretty chic-silky in its texture, sunny in its flavors. Grab a case to drink this winter; the wine should really begin to open by spring."
