Hailing from the Puglia region of Italy, the Primitivo is a robust black grape that tends to ripen a little faster than many other varieties. The deep color and the strong flavor have ensured that it remains a favorite with many wine fans. This grape was one of several varieties to be successfully planted in the California region during the middle of the 19th century. Today, the popularity of Primitivo has led to be being one of the more popular options at many California vineyards. It’s estimated that more than ten percent of the vineyards in the state will devote a significant amount of space to Primitivo cultivation. One of the reasons for the higher alcohol content is the sweetness of the grape. When fermented, the grape can create a wine with more than 15% alcohol content. Paired with the sweetness of the wine, it should come as no surprise that many enthusiasts keep a bottle or two on hand for meals, afternoon drinks, and friendly gatherings.
