"The 2018 Crianza was produced with 93% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha and 2% Viura and bottled at 13% alcohol, a little lower than the 2015 vintage that I also tasted. It matured in used barrels for 23 months. It was a more challenging year with rain and heat and some fungal diseases—they had to work. The grapes have a lot of acidity, and there are some more herbal notes; it's a cooler wine, with finesse and notes of fresh blood. It's different from the others, with citrus freshness, grainy tannins and I think good potential for aging in bottle. 14,000 bottles were filled in June 2021."
Luis Guttierez, The Wine Advocate, July 2022

Bodega Akutain’s history begins in the early 1970’s with the small family property’s founder, Juan Peñagaricano Akutain. Señor Akutain forged bonds with the families behind some of the Rioja region’s most storied traditionalist estates, including CVNE and La Rioja Alta.
After many years spent visiting the cellars, studying local vineyard techniques, and drinking every bottle of Rioja he could lay his hands on (all the while saving his earnings), Akutain was ready to plant his own vineyards.
He spent a few years searching for the perfect site and finally, in 1975, he found his dream property located just west of the village of Haro, the epicenter of Rioja.
