"The 2022 Manyetes, their Cariñena from the lieu-dit in Gratallops that names the wine, fermented with 50% full clusters, 30% in a carbonic maceration way and the rest with a long, 40-day, maceration. It matured in 2,000-liter oak foudres for 20 months. It has contained ripeness and only 13.5% alcohol, lighter than expected with a medium-bodied palate. It's very difficult to work with cover crops here; it's their warmest vineyard, and they get very low yields. The part of the carbonic fermentation was harvested quite early and helped to keep the alcohol down and to retain freshness in the wine. It has aromas of graphite, dark berry fruit and an earthy touch, hints of smoked meats too, and a surprisingly light palate, only medium-bodied, with an ethereal quality to it but very energetic. It has the dusty texture of the Priorat schist. The oak is neatly integrated. None of the wines showed any oak, even though they are introducing new foudres to age their wines in larger-volume containers."

Clos Mogador

Founded in 1979 by René Barbier III and his wife, Isabelle Meyer, Clos Mogador was part of a new wave of ‘Clos’ wineries that released their first joint 1989 vintage to great acclaim. They have gone on to garner impressive scores by wine critics and have built up one of the most well-known brands in all of Priorat.

René Barbier III is descended from a family of French winemakers although he was born in Tarragona and grew up in Catalonia. Coming with his wife Isabelle Meyer and their young children to the Priorat region, he found a promising wine region that had been neglected for years.

In addition to their namesake Clos Mogador, they released a white wine called Nelin as well as another red called, Manyetes. The Clos Mogador was one of the first wines to be awarded the ‘Vi de Finca’ certification in Catalonia which signifies that it has been produced for over a decade from the same, single vineyard.

The name of the winery comes from ‘Les Gens de Mogador’ (The people of Mogador) which chronicles the rise and fall of a family from near Avignon in France on an imaginary estate called, Mogador and closely parallels the Barbier family history.
